Government sanction for the Project was obtained in June 1977 and stripping operation started in August 1979, after the first shovel was commissioned and haul roads and shovel faces constructed. The mine at full production capacity will remove 11.5 million tones of overburden and waste rock, to recover 2 million tones of chalcopyrite ore of average grade 1.2 cu per annum. A total of 22.6 Km of diamond drilling in 91 bore holes has been carried out till September 1978 to explore ore reserves upto a depth 376 MRL
< xml="true" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" prefix="o" namespace="">OVERVIEW OF INDIAN MINING SECTOR
Mining sector is an important segment of the Indian economy. The country is endowed with a huge resources of bauxite, barites, iron ore, manganese ore, chromite, limestone, dolomite titanium mineral, building stones like marble, granite, coal etc. Since independence there has been a phenomenal growth in mineral production, both in terms of quantity and value. The country produces 57 major minerals and 23 minor minerals. In the value of mineral production, the fuel minerals constitute 79% of the total value, whereas the metallic minerals constitute 8 % and non-metallic constitute 13 % respectively.
The India Mining Industry is at the crossroads with challenges and opportunities presenting themselves in the wake of far reaching economic reforms sweeping the country. Investment opportunities have been opened up in mining and mineral beneficiation for both domestic and foreign entrepreneurs. The mineral rich state Governments have been playing a leading role in showcasing the investment opportunities available in their respective States.

The importance of mining sector to our economy becomes all the more pronounced with the fact that the projected growth of the Indian economy, would require increasingly higher quantities of basic raw materials such as coal, iron ore, limestone, bauxite, copper, lead, zinc etc. to meet the growing demand of the domestic consumption as well as exports. In view of the rising demand of minerals and metals, the country is likely to remain a net importer especially for non-ferrous metals like gold, uncut diamond and fertilizer minerals. This situation needs to be tackled through priority programmes for encouraging investments into exploration and development of new mineral deposits in a sustainable manner.
